All those shiny things we desire—it’s really just a trick of the light. See how you can use continuous lighting to really bring out the sparkle.
What do you need? Whether you’re involved in e-commerce, still life, or product photography, you need lighting that brings out the details and makes the shiny parts shine. Impact’s Octacool-9 Fluorescent Light with Octabox is a great option. It’s powerful, its pebbled silver interior provides punch and contrast, and its fluorescent bulbs will run cool for hours.
Why continuous lighting? Continuous lighting has a big advantage over flash photography, because what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG). That means you can eliminate the guesswork and see exactly how you’re lighting your subject before releasing the shutter—including adjusting intensity, perfecting your catchlights, and removing unwanted glare and shadow.
Light positioning When positioning the light source, it’s best to start off by placing it at a 45-degree lateral angle. You should also start by elevating it by about 20 degrees, because humans by instinct are accustomed to seeing the world lit from above. This will give you a natural-looking starting point. From here, you can start to experiment by playing with positioning or even adding a second light source.
What else? It’s best to turn down all the other lights in the room so that you have full control over your lighting. Beyond that, experiment! Play with light positioning, intensity, additional light sources, reflectors, etc. With the Octacool, remember that you also have the option of removing the diffuser for a punchier, more specular look.
